WHAT I DID

With a team of about 15 people, I was able to help with various responsibilities within the office involving graphic design, marketing, and other communication roles while interacting with other students every day. Through this internship, I have been able to learn many lessons including effective, purposeful communication and organization, the ability to fill a need and help others find fulfillment, and how to quickly solve problems as they arise. In addition to having a graphic designer on our team, I was primarily responsible for the design and market related content within the office. I was responsible for the creation of television slides, also known as digisigns, weekly newsletters, website and calendar edits, and the bulletin board.

overview

I had the opportunity to complete an Internship during the last year of my undergrad at The Center for Service and Learning, or Y-Serve, on BYU campus. Y-Serve's mission is to provide every student with a meaningful service opportunity and instill in the heart and mind a desire to give lifelong service. With 70 different programs run by students both on and off-campus, there are plenty of opportunities for BYU students to serve members of the community. The office staff helps to make these connections and run the overall organization.

my takeaways

This internship was an incredible experience and I am so grateful for all that I learned through this experience! In addition to the

many graphic design projects I was able to complete, I was able to work on my communication skills everyday and apply many things I learned in the BYU Advertising Program. This internship helped strengthen my organization skills while balancing various projects each week, enhanced my research and design abilities as they were put to the test, and taught me the importance of filling a need with the help of those around us. With a unique selling point, not promoting a product, but working to help students find service activities to become involved in, I knew everyday that what I was doing was going towards a good cause. This experience has left me with a enhanced desire to use my skills to help others in whatever way I can.

Through this experience, I learned a lot about myself and my work habits. One example of this is how when I am in a situation where I know

I can help, I become very proactive and the ideas start flowing. I think a big part of this comes from my previous advertising experience, and

this internship brought it out as it provided constant opportunities to help others through the many behind the scenes details. I believe I have

strengthened my problem solving abilities and learned how to truly apply the principle of "less is more". I have also learned more

about how giving an audience what they are looking for is always the most effective way to communicate with them.

Working with my team taught me about making a general message speak to individual students, the value each person brings to a larger organization, and the importance of a positive work environment in creating effective work. I know I could not have accomplished all I did during this time without them.
